Introduction to GitHub

For the next two weeks we will collaborate on a text encoding project. In order to organize files effectively and to keep track of who is working on what during the collaboration, we will use an online project management tool called GitHub install the application GitHub Desktop on our computers. GitHub can be confusing at first but if you understand the concepts of pushing and pulling changes to project files, you will get the hang of it.

GitHub is a standard platform for managing the online projects of a group, whether they be programming code for software or chapters for a book to be published. If you know how to use GitHub you will have a valuable skill for employment.

Here is what you need to do to use GitHub:

  1. Create an account with GitHub.
  2. Send me an email with your GitHub username. I will invite you to join the HartwickDH GitHub group.
  3. While you are waiting for your invitation, install GitHub Desktop on your computer.
  4. Follow the instructions for Contributing to Projects with GitHub Desktop to clone HilltopsArchive.
  5. When you have successfully cloned the HilltopsArchive repository using GitHub Desktop, you're done.
